Celebrating the Journey of Breastfeeding

The breastfeeding journey is a beautiful experience that our owner Danielle feels fortunate to have been able to experience with both of her boys. She discussed how this experience has been incredibly different with both boys, confirming what everyone always says “Every journey is unique”.

Danielle’s first experience was difficult, as her son struggled with digestive issues and a tethered oral tissue. She did not think that feeding her son should be so difficult. Upon seeking help and advice on his TOT, her therapist's knowledge and mom's gut instinct were shut down by 2 doctors until she sought help from a speech and language pathologist who specialized in TOTs. With a recommendation in hand, Danielle was able to get her son’s tie clipped at 7.5 weeks. His feeding journey improved greatly after this. He was able to nurse and bottle feed with pumped milk through 13 months of age. Reflecting on this feeding experience Danielle feels that she was so lucky to be able to feed her son for as long as she did without formula. Although it was an incredible experience, she acknowledges that it took strength to continue for as long as she did because it was not something that was easy. Being a working mom, she was always anxious about ensuring she pumped enough.

Danielle's second experience is completely different from her first. She is currently nursing and pumping for her 5-month-old son. As a result of her experience with her first son, she became a specialist in feeding and she also knew what to look for. When she noticed that her second son had a TOT she made the appointment right away and was able to have his TOT clipped at 2 weeks. This greatly improved their feeding journey. She has had to implement the same elimination diet that she did with her first son in order to help with digestion. This second time around she does not struggle as much with the anxiousness surrounding keeping up her supply, however, she acknowledges what a big commitment pumping is.
